"The Birth of a Nation"

In the effort to create one Nation under God, many gave their lives, and not just in death. George Washington's life became the Nation's. In this work, Washington's profile becomes less important than the image of the stars and stripes behind him. This was meant to show how any person who desires to be a part of something bigger than themselves, must loose themselves in that work to truly find themselves.

"And the Word was made Flesh"

"IN the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made...And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us."
John 1:1-3, 14

"What could I have done more for my vineyard"

Jacob 5 in the Book of Mormon is known as the Allegory of the Olive Tree. The master of the vineyard is faced with a decaying old Olive tree (the house of Israel) that he feels is worth saving. After grafting and pruning, digging and dunging, the tree produces wild olives. In a moment of frustration the master throws down his pruning hook and exclaims "what could I have done more!" This moment of mourning reveals the tender feelings of a Savior who does everything He can to redeem a rebellious and foolish people.

"Fire in the Bones"

Jeremiah was one prophet who suffered much for his God and at one point wondered if he should go on. “Then I said, I will not make mention of him, nor speak any more in his name. But his word was in mine heart as a burning fire shut up in my bones, and I was weary with forbearing, and I could not stay.” (Jeremiah 20:9) All who seek to be Disciples of Christ will need to feel in a measure this kind of feeling that the word is in us as a burning fire.

"Oh that I were an angel"

“Oh that I were an angel!” cried Alma after a challenging mission among his beloved brethren. This plea is felt by any who love, testify and are rejected. Such a plea Alma later would feel guilty for making, but the Lord would still honor. It’s in Alma 45 where we read “he was a righteous man; and the saying went abroad in the church that he was taken up by the Spirit…even as Moses.”

"The Mantle of Elijah"

Elisha and Elijah lived in a time when it was not popular to worship the God of Israel for Israel was in a state of apostasy. It was in these tremulous times that Elijah called, tutored and trained Elisha to carry on the work of the Lord after Elijah is taken. A double portion of the Spirit which Elijah had was promised Elisha if he was Elijah as he was taken. Not only was Elijah visible, but his mantle fell to Elisha and would ever be a symbol of prophet authority.

"It is good for us to be here"

“AND after six days Jesus taketh Peter, James, and John his brother, and bringeth them up into an high mountain apart, and was transfigured before them: and his face did shine as the sun, and his raiment was white as the light. And, behold, there appeared unto them Moses and Elias talking with him. Then answered Peter, and said unto Jesus, Lord, it is good for us to be here: if thou wilt, let us make here three tabernacles; one for thee, and one for Moses, and one for Elias.”
Matthew 17:1-4
